Calculating the total cost of ownership when shopping for a new car brings one oft-overlooked expense: the cost of insurance. Some cars, trucks and SUVs are simply much more expensive to cover than others, with the cheapest vehicles, as you’ll see, often driven by families with children, and carrying relatively low base prices and costs of repairs. Our data comes from the recent 2015 annual study of real-world insurance premiums from thousands of actual owners as collected by Insure.com.
The Escape outranks most other crossover SUVs in insurance premiums thanks in no small part to its strong safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA as well as a typical buyer who is middle-aged, lives in the suburbs and might have a kid or two. It is also inexpensive at under $23k and has a high domestic parts content, helping make repairs less costly. Now if Ford could only finish figuring out what to do about that confounding SYNC system...
