Top 10 Ugliest Cars of the 1980’s

What can one say about the 1980’s? Aside from this humble writer being born in that decade, to be completely honest, there isn’t to much to remember, or at the very least, a healthy amount of stuff that people would prefer to forget. However, this does beg the question as to what was so bad about those ten years between 1979 and 1990?

The ten-year stretch known as the 80s started off with “bang” as they say, but not in a good way, especially with the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state that killed 57 and $3 billion in damages. It was this same year that the United States faced one of its most devastating heat waves, claimed between 1,250 and 10,000 lives and massive drought, creating agricultural damage estimates neared $44 billion.

Former Beatle John Lennon dies in the hospital after being shot outside his New York City apartment by Mark David Chapman, a deranged fan who had received his signature earlier in the day. While a tragedy in its own right, for many, this fact was further compounded by the seemingly dismal musical offerings of the time, from such artists(if you can call them that) as Taco, Falco, and Men Without Hats.

Even the fashion at the time holds little that is memorable, or even anything worth emulating, from its parachute pants to its big hair, from its neon bright clothing to shoulder pads, it seems that the attire of the time was very reflective of the overall culture. It was loud, bright, awkward and didn’t seem to fit in.

Regardless of all that happened in the 1980s from music to fashion, politics to natural disasters, there was one sector that the world was highly anticipating, especially from America, and that was the automotive industry. U.S. President Jimmy Carter authorized legislation giving $1.5 billion in loans to bail out the Chrysler Corporation (sound familiar?). It was this little/big push that the car fans at home and across the globe were looking at to help make the U.S. automotive industry great again. Sadly, it failed.

Much like everything else to come out of the 1980s, the cars produced in this decade were uninspired, ugly, poorly made, and a nightmare to drive. Fortunately for the U.S. – the country on the whole, not the individual drivers – it seemed the rest of the world was also producing sub par cars. But what were the worst of the worst, from home and abroad during the 1980s? Thankfully, you will have to wait no longer.

Allow us to present the 10 ugliest cars to ever come out of the 1980’s.
